The IIT campus itself is a tourist attraction with its modernistic architecture by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and more recently by Rem Koolhaus and Helmut Jahn.

The IIT campus is in downtown Chicago in the heart of the thriving 3rd largest city in the USA.  There are too many attractions for visitors to attempt to list them here.  Some web sites of interest are:

  • The Chicago Office of Tourism can give suggestions for a variety of activities throughout the city, including ethnic neighborhoods, museums, theater, and much more!
  • Getting around Chicago is best done by using the "L" elevated trains or subway; see the CTA web site for details.
  • Check out the Chicago Reader, one of the best guides to current events of all types in and around the city.
  • And for events on and around the IIT campus, as well as the greater Chicagoland area, see TheTube.

  • Personal favorites of the local organizers are:

  • The city of Chicago is home each year to a variety of music and food festivals.  The largest of these celebrations is the Taste of Chicago which will be in progress during the Conference. You should plan to spend at least one night at this famous festival, and if you stay an extra day, Chicago's fabulous "July 4th" celebration, including music and a huge fireworks display, is held as part of the Taste on July 3.
  • Biking the lakefront is a pleasant daytime or early evening activity.  It will help to clear your mind for the heavy thinking at the Conference. Bikes can be rented at many places, with perhaps the most accessible at Navy Pier.
  • The Near North and Lincoln Park neighborhoods are a wonderful place to walk and to have dinner at night. After dinner consider going to the Second City comedy club or any of Chicago's many Jazz and Blues clubs.
  • Chicago's Chinatown is only one Red-line "L" stop from campus and is worth a visit during lunch or for an evening.
  • The Garfield Park Conservatory on the West Side is only a short Green-line "L" ride to Conservatory station.
  • A cruise on Lake Michigan or the Chicago River is often enjoyed by many out-of-town guests.  Of particular interest are the tours sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, including a spectacular river tour.
